Hey Guys,
Been a listener for a while. Would be great to get your perspective on the clubs you run in and the different types. I know up here in the Sierra foothills there are family clubs, hardcore clubs, etc. I’m new to the Jeep experience and having a great time, but looking for a club that can teach a newbie how to have fun and wheel properly. Now that Greg’s rig is getting fixed up for SEMA, that puts a damper on my idea of doing some light wheeling with him and my 2015 stock JKU!

Many of us travel trails less traveled. That is what we love about 4 wheeling. But that idea in itself prevents many problems, obstacles and challenges. Going where many do not in a vehicle designed for modern travel. What gear do you need for these trips?

Chainsaw, loppers, garbage bags, straps, snatch block, shovel, digging bar
Spare tire, high lift, shackles,

Knowing your limits…and being prepared.

Listener Feedback:

Hi Greg and Jeff,

I’ve recently made a triumphant return to the off-roading clan with my recent purchase of a 2014 2 door Rubicon back in January of this year. After unfortunately grenading / Jeffn’ my last Wrangler around 10 years ago, (it was a good death) now I’m ready to build myself a new ridge.
After powering through all your Off-Road and High Sierra pod casts (great job by the way you guys complement each other perfectly). That being said, I would like to pick your brains on a Low Center of Gravity build.

Greg, I now have the same approach to off-roading as you do smart crawling and keeping the pin in the grenade. I recall you stating that you would have liked to install an LC of G on your LJ, which intrigued me. Is that no longer the case for you JKU Rubi? And why?

I’m not looking to do any hardcore rock crawling but would still like to have a capable ridge if the mood arises. I looked up Rokmen for an LC of G but wasn’t able to find a package for a JK. Would you be able to suggest anyone else to look up?

Not really sure what components I would need to accomplish this but my ideal build would include a package that would give me great suspension travel without the top heaviness of a large lift and the ability to fit my JK in the garage without having to air down my tires. I would also like to keep my tire size to down to 34 or 35 inches. Help me Obi-Wan Kanobi you’re my only hope!

Unibody

The term unibody or unit-body is short for unitized body, or alternatively unitary construction design. In this approach the vehicle’s frame and body are integrated into a single strong structure.

Visiting the Rubicon
If you have the driving skills, a brand new stock Wrangler can be driven through the Rubicon, taking the bypasses. Most people should expect sheet metal damage, at a minimum. Larger tires (33”), a lift kit (3”), body protection (rocker guards) and a locking or limited slip differential should be considered to prevent damage.

Listener Feedback:

A few episodes ago you asked that XJ Cherokee owners email you to let you know that we listened to your podcast. I have listened to every episode, even on your previous network, as I enjoy your show. I believe there are probably numerous XJ listeners in your audience after all there is a huge parts aftermarket for the XJ and they are still very popular on the trail. XJ’s are very capable Jeeps when prepared correctly just like any other Jeep. Mine is a 1992 four door California Jeep still in great condition. I have installed frame stiffeners and have had no problems that you allude to with having a unitized body. It is used as our second car and can still comfortably carry the whole family and yet go off road, something you appear to nervous to do with your $40,000 JKU.

I think XJ’s are one of the “best bang for the bucks” out there. Mine has an 8 inch left with long arm suspension, lockers front and rear, body armour (store bought and self made) plus many other upgrades and still has air conditioning and power windows. The wife likes to drive it off road also, and is becoming decent at it. We do all kinds of off road driving from the Colorado Rockies to Ocotillo Wells at Anza Borrego,Ca. I don’t really care to do STRICKLY rock crawling, as you are just asking to tear up your rig or break something NEEDLESSLY that you have spent a lot of time and money on. It has gone over its fair share of rocks when needed. I nicknamed the Wrangler looking body style Jeeps “Belly button” Jeeps as everybody has one.
Respectfully Doug
